Exhibition opening: Till vänner, uppströms och nedströms, medvind och motvind [To friends, upstream and downstream, leeward and windward]

Dear Sweden-based Friends – it is our great pleasure to invite you all to the opening of the exhibition Till vänner, uppströms och nedströms, medvind och motvind [To friends, upstream and downstream, leeward and windward] taking place on 19th December at 18:00 CET at Hegerstensåsens Medborgarhus (Hegerstesåsen’s citizens’ house) in Stockholm.

The show stems from artist and researcher mirko nikolić‘s artistic research project dealing with questions of environmental justice in the Balkans.

The exhibition Till vänner, uppströms och nedströms, medvind och motvind [To friends, upstream and downstream, leeward and windward] will be presented at the sound exhibition room at Hegerstensåsens Medborgarhus. It emerges from mirko nikolić’s artistic research project about different struggles for environmental justice in the Balkans.

The research, ongoing since 2020, followed the ongoing expansions of the mining sector in Serbia, which cause dissent and opposition by the citizens. The background of this new wave of extraction are centuries of exploitation which have left deep traces in the landscape and people, while the current developments are connected to the dominant discourses, policies and strategies of fossil and ”green” capital, and their interlockings. The research project was carried out at Linköping University, with funding by the Swedish Research Council.

The exhibition presents text and sound, and is part of the exhibition series Utvinning/Återvinning [Extraction/Recycling] that runs 2023-2024 and explores the politics and aesthetics of extraction. The exhibition programme at Hägerstensåsens medborgarhus is presented with support from Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet).
